1991: Conspiracy of Dunces

The lead news story, in the first issue (January 7) of 1991, once again inspired misplaced optimism that AIDS was finally going to have a dramatic etiological and epidemiological course correction. I wrote a piece about a major Miami Herald article by Elinor Burkett which asked “whether government scientists have made a terrible mistake by labeling ‘HIV’ the cause of ‘AIDS.’ ”

I noted that Burkett was “the first writer on a major newspaper to ask the questions the New York Native has been asking for several years. The five-page article was featured on the cover of the December 23, 1990 issue of Tropic, the newspaper’s magazine section.”
